Who You Are – Heart and Soul

What makes up the real you? When all is said and done, you are alone at the end of the day, what are you left with? A heart full of hope and desires for the best? Knowledge that things will get better because that is what you decided? Will you fulfill your role in life and do it well because that is who you are? Or, are you poisoned by negativity, drowning in a sea of hopelessness, calling down judgment and blaming all those who make up your world?

No doubt about it – the essence of who you are is the heart and soul. It’s been said the eyes are the window of the soul. Y’know how you can look into someone’s face and you see their eyes … and you realize, the eyes say it for them? You can see shining out of the eyes happiness, contentment, and pure joy at being alive or unrest, fear and even wickedness or evil. Also, suffice it to say as a man thinks in his heart that’s how he is … in the end a person’s actions will tell on him and you will indeed know what is in his heart.

A person’s heart and soul doesn’t come ready made into some lofty entity. We are beautiful, without guile, and truly pure when we are born into this world but then as we grow and develop, our spiritual nature matures and ripens into loveliness or deteriorates into something unpleasant. It will depend a great deal on our surroundings and the interaction we have with those around us. Some of this we don’t have a choice about – who our parents are, the environment to which we are born – that’s all pretty much out of our control.

But then, there’s comes a point when we are making the decisions - who are our friends? how do we spend our free time? what books do we choose to read? or do we read at all? what movies or t.v. shows do we watch … do we persist in dwelling in darkness, betrayal, ugliness and truly believe it won’t rub off on us? Or do we decide on purity, wholesomeness, and quality? These choices are what will make our heart and soul a good thing or not … and then it boils down to the ‘character’ of a man or woman. Do they have any backbone, are they steady and true to high morals and integrity? Would you trust this person with your secrets? Would you trust them to lift you up when you need that hand of deliverance?

We have a choice to develop our heart and soul into an incredible masterpiece – tweaking ourselves here, erasing this, adding a little sunshine there, and modifying that … we make the choice of who and what we are. It is as simple as that – but also, so complicated, so humbling, so wonderful.

I long to be my best self. I know I am capable of so much more than what I am doing now. I know I can be so much better.

But how? With what tools? Whose going to help?

The answer:

First and foremost – God. Yes, it is with God’s help … yeah, sure, but …

how does He help? Where can I go?

Well … there’s a lot to this but for now …

If we open our eyes to see, our ears to hear and if we humble our stubborn hearts to receive words of wisdom, we will realize God helps us through the world around us – friends, parents, family, good books, and His never-failing Word.

Our choices lay before us every single day. It’s like a artist’s palette – every good and pure color and hue imaginable – the colors representing honorable and wonderful choices … and all we have to do is pick up the brush, select just what we need to create our Masterpiece!

Sure, we’ll make mistakes and sometimes make a real mess of ourselves, but you see, God knew that and within His marvelous plan this wondrous Creator made a way that we could wash ourselves totally clean and start again … working on our beautiful, glorious selves day by day and gradually transforming ourselves into creatures of magnificence. It’s so dadgum exciting!! and this is what I want,  not just for me alone,  but for you too – to be transformed into Magnificence!

Amazing … this heart and soul part of us … it’s Who You Are.
